To me, dark side of the web is the web where you surf the web without using a centralized platform. By centralized platforms, I mostly mean social media. But social media is not the whole of this. There are Google's own feed in google app and chrome home screen on mobile. Alternatives to surf the web using these platforms are old and scarce but also there are some new tools to make them easy.
Checking a specific web site regularly is probably the oldest way of surfing the web but this is not really useful if you have to keep up with lots of things. RSS is the best tool for this and most of the web sites are still supporting it. Since it doesn't generate any revenue, google abandoned it's rss reader app but then a plethora of rss readers emerged. I use feedly to keep up with my scientific journals. I also follow some news with it but not really. And if you want to archive the stuff you read, you can use Paperpile for journals and pocket for all the other things. Pocket is a mozilla app so I trust it and it saves the web pages offline. So if the page is deleted later, you can still access it.
Using these tools, I confidently surf the web without using any of the social media tools. I still use conventional web but i am not very confident in their feeds.
